MEND Programme is coming to Eastbourne to help overweight children get fitter, healthier and happier

On the week commencing 19th January a programme aimed at helping overweight children manage their weight is coming to Eastbourne.  The MEND Programme (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it!) is part of a national initiative offering free healthy lifestyle courses for overweight 7 to 13 year olds and their families in more than 250 locations across the UK.  This is the first time that it has been available to families in the area.

Hailsham Community College is working in partnership with Eastbourne Technology College to run the course, which starts on Tuesday 20th January at Eastbourne Technology College and runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm to 7pm. Families take part in fun 2-hour sessions, twice a week for 10 weeks.  The Programme helps them improve their eating and exercise habits, thereby improving children’s fitness, physical activity levels, nutrition and self-esteem. Thanks to funding from the Youth Sports Trust, 12 places on the course worth up to £400 per child are being offered to families completely free of charge on a first come first served basis.

The MEND Programme is the UK’s largest healthy lifestyle programme for overweight children and their parents. Rather than focusing on weight loss, the Programme uses a practical interactive learning approach to teach children and parents weight management skills. This includes inspiring families to adopt a healthier lifestyle and enjoy preparing and eating healthy foods as well as reading food labels and healthy shopping on a budget.  There are also simple but exciting sessions which focus on making exercise fun again – especially for children who are not fans of traditional school sports.

The MEND Programme has proven results.  Youngsters, who take part change body shape, reduce their waistlines and achieve a healthier weight for their age and height, which results not only in them being healthier and fitter but also gaining in self esteem and confidence.

Miss Abdalla, MEND Programme Manager at Eastbourne Technology College says, “The MEND Programme can really change families’ lives. We offer a friendly relaxed atmosphere to encourage children to give new things a go and show parents how they can be supportive and involve the whole family in making healthier choices and following an active lifestyle. Children become healthier and fitter while their self esteem and confidence increase greatly. We very much hope families will take up the chance to improve their health with this fantastic free course.”

Places on the MEND Programme are being giving away on a first come, first served basis. Families interested in participating should contact Jo Templeman on 01323 841468 ext 331 or visit www.mendprogramme.org and click on ‘Join a MEND Programme’. Please note a parent or carer must accompany each child to every session.

Two Semi-Finals, two victories

MONDAY 8th DECEMBER:  YEAR 10 Vs ST. RICHARDS
South-East Sussex Schools Division 1 Semi Final
ETC    6
ST. RICHARDS 5
BILLY ALSOP 3, CRISTOS MISIRLIS 1, STEVEN MARYAN 1, JOE MARODZA 1
ETC entertained St. Richards from Bexhill in the SESS Division 1 Semi Final, and what a thrilling game it turned out to be.  Having won Eastbourne & District Division 1, ETC drew home advantage against a team that had beaten ETC comfortably two years ago.
ETC started brightly with Billy Alsop giving the St. Richards centre halves a torrid time. He picked up a loose ball in midfield and went through a couple of challenges, but the goalkeeper made a good save.

Several minutes later, ETC took the lead when the goalkeeper made a great double save from Alsop and Matt Mulhern, but he could not prevent the third attempt from Alsop, which was deflected in to the net from 20 yards.
This seemed to wake St. Richards up, and they forced a number of set pieces that they looked dangerous from. It was from one of these, a corner that they equalised from, when an unmarked player headed in from 5 yards.  At 1-1, the game was very even, and it was a piece of brilliant skill by Alsop which brought the second goal.  He beat three players with ease before calmly putting the ball into the back of the net to restore the lead. The best goal was yet to come however, and from an unlikely source.  Centre back Cristos Misirlis picked the ball up from just outside ETC’s penalty area after a half cleared corner. He then proceeded to run the length of the pitch, beating three players before smashing the ball into the roof of the net for the goal of the season award.  Unfortunately ETC could not maintain the two goal lead for long as another set piece was not defended properly and this resulted in a penalty being awarded for handball. The St. Richards Captain stepped up and scored easily to make it 3-2 at half time.
After half time, ETC stepped up a gear knowing that they were clearly the best team and sensed they were close to their first final appearance. Joe Marodza and Mulhern started to gain complete control of the midfield and find the wingers with better passes. It was from a Mulhern pass to Bob Olusanya that led to ETC’s fourth goal. Olusanya took it round the right back before crossing to Steven Maryan at the back post to slide the ball in from an acute angle. It got better for ETC as Alsop completed his hat trick and Marodza scored the sixth from another Olusanya cross. The game seemed over as ETC were 6-2 up and the back four of Ollie Nealey, Tyrell Berry, Misirlis and Michael Parsons seemed to be impenetrable. However, a lack of fitness and/or players switching off mentally let St. Richards back into the game.  They scored three quick goals in the final 10 minutes to make the score 6-5 to set up a nervous last few minutes, but ETC held firm and went through to the final to play the winner of William Parker A Vs Bishop Bell.
Team: Jake Taylor, Ollie Nealey (Will Congiu), Cristos Misirlis, Tyrell Berry (c), Michael Parsons, Joe Marodza, JJ Flaherty (Jake Wallis), Matt Mulhern, Steven Maryan, Billy Alsop, Bob Olusanya.
MAN OF THE MATCH: TYRELL BERRY – “COMMANDED THE BACK FOUR SUPERBLY AND MADE SOME GREAT LAST DITCH TACKLES.”

Mr. Moore.

Wednesday 10th December: YEAR 7 BOYS FOOTBALL
South-East Sussex Schools Division 2 Semi Final
ETC Vs William Parker B
ETC welcomed a big and strong William Parker to a bitterly cold ETC on Wednesday for the league semi final. ETC had won 2 and lost 1 in the league, but won the division on goal difference, so were confident of progressing to the final.
ETC started well with the midfield trio of Reece Collymore, Lee Schooling and Alfie Dunne linking up nicely with some good passing to create several chances.
Jake Maynard, Collymore and Aaron Saunders all had shots well saved by the impressive William Parker goalkeeper. At the other end, Josh Coney had little to do as the ETC back 3 did not let the Parker attackers even turn on the ball. Just before half time, ETC took the lead when Collymore let fly from a free kick which went into the back of the net from 25 yards.
ETC started slowly in the second half and Parker equalised almost immediately when a corner was not cleared.  This woke ETC up and they started to play some nice football again and Collymore grabbed his second, after great perseverance down the left wing. Another defensive slip let Parker equalise for the second time, but ETC once again struck back with Collymore netting his hat trick, this time from a shot just outside the penalty area. ETC were determined not to let the lead slip again, and scored a fourth goal to have the comfort of a two goal cushion. Dunne picked the ball up in midfield and played a great pass through for Maynard to shoot home. As Parker pushed forwards, Etc has numerous chances to extend the lead, but chances were wasted. However, it was not to matter as the final whistle blew and ETC had reached the final in their first year at the school.
Team: Josh Coney, Callum Langford, Matt Castle, Cane Stolton, Aaron Saunders (Tobias Ekroth-Smith), Alfie Dunne, Lee Schooling (C), Reece Collymore, Dan Bazeley, Jake Maynard, Ryan Feirn (Andrew Swansborough).
MAN OF THE MATCH: REECE COLLYMORE – “100% EFFORT THROUGHOUT AND A SUPERB HAT TRICK.”
Mr. Moore.

ETC   10
PEACEHAVEN 1
JADE ISTED 5, WERONIKA SUWALA 2, FABIANNA CAIRNES 2, EMILY CROUCH 1.
A very cold evening saw this game played at home for the first time, ETC looked organised and up for the challenge.  Right from kick off ETC pushed forward on the attack, asking questions of Peacehavens defence.  Jade Isted was quick to break the deadlock through some good individual skill and calm finish.  ETC always looked a threat on the attack and managed to net themselves 4 more goals before half time.
The second half started the same as the first had finished, Fabianna Cairnes, Weronika Suwala and Emily Crouch also netting goals for ETC.
This by far was definitely ETCs best performance of the season, not only because of the amount of goals and a win, but also because everything we have spoke about and worked on throughout the season had finally come together.  Well done girls!!
MOM:  JADE ISTED “great skill and clinical in her finishing.”

PEACEHAVEN 0
ETC   9
SHANTELLE OMAR 5, HANNAH BLUNDELL 2, CHARLEIGH CROTTY 1, EMILY GILLAM 1
Tough conditions saw both teams battling against the wind and rain, making it extremely difficult in the first half to pass around and keep possession.  Although ETC gained control early on, they had to work hard in getting the ball up the pitch due to the weather.  Any successful attempts were coming from the right wing through Blundell, Omar and Gillam.  After a lot of pressure from ETC Shantelle Omar broke the deadlock through a lofted volley over the keeper.  Soon after this the flood gates opened and ETC netted another 3 before the half had finished.
In the second half ETC really stepped up the pace, some slick sharp passing in central midfield from Lauren Hughes, Blundell, Lola Olusanya and Emily Gillam created lots of goal scoring opportunities, with Hannah Blundell; Charleigh Crotty and Emily Gillam also getting themselves on the score sheet.  Although Peacehaven never posed any threat to Jaz Izzard, Bekki French and Kiaya Pike in defence and ETC were in control comfortably, the girls still demonstrated their quality through some fantastic build up play in attack.  A great performance by all, well done!!
MOM:  SHANTELLE OMAR “demonstrates great individual ability and always looks a threat upfront.”

LEWES PRIORY 4
ETC   1

A much improved performance from the year 7s, who travelled away to Lewes on a cold and wet evening.  The first half saw both teams battle hard to gain the advantage, Emily Crouch made two or three good saves whilst the other end of the pitch saw Fabianna Cairnes create some fantastic opportunities for herself and the team to shoot.  ETC were working hard and were starting to look confident going forward.  A well delivered corner from Fabianna Cairnes was met by a cluster of players all trying to do their jobs, after a bit of a goal line scramble Weronica Suwala managed to squeeze the ball past the keeper making it 1-0 ETC.  The Priory always looked a threat through one very skilful player going forward, Lauren Morris had a great battle with her through the half; after several chances she finally created the space for herself to slot the ball home just before half time making it 1 all.
Moments into the second half and Lewes managed to break ETCs defence and score again.  ETC still showed great determination and signs of equalizing, however the Lewes goal keeper made some outstanding saves keeping ETC at bay.  Another two goals came late on in the half from Lewes, both teams had equal opportunities however Lewes were clinical in their finishing.  A great performance from the girls!
MOM:  LAUREN MORRIS “Alert, reads the game well and great positioning”.
