Cricket, commitment, reputation and attendance…

This is not meant as a moan, but PE staff give up a lot of their time at lunchtime and after school and we ask for the same commitment from all pupils.  Recently cricket nets have been poorly attended and our younger students have not attended the games.  When we cannot fulfil fixtures we let down everyone involved and ETCs reputation is affected.

Please can we all make an effort to get organised and attend practices and matches if you have committed to the team.  We have cricket, rounders and tennis matches coming up so please see teachers running that club to let them know if you are interested, otherwise some fixtures will have to be cancelled.

Thursday 1st May: SUSSEX AREA YEAR 9 RUGBY FINALS

Thursday 1st May:  SUSSEX AREA YEAR 9 RUGBY FINALS
The year 9 rugby team reached the final of this for the first time in their history.
Their first game was against the Eastern Area Winners Claverham (Battle), they started the game well with Billy Alsop scoring a solo try; sadly he did not succeed with the kick.  ETC held out to the last minute with excellent defending from skipper Jake Wallis and Kieran Farnes. Unfortunately however after all of the ETC boys hard work Claverham scored right in the dying seconds of the game; also converting their kick leaving ETC trailing by 2 points.
The second game against Priory school Lewes (last years winners) was also a close game, ETC struggled at times with the teams main scorer Tyrell Berry out injured, and the power in the scrum Chris Bennett also out.  New players Reece Mewitt and Steven Maryan played extremely well, with Maryan pulling off some fantastic tackles.  At the end of the game ETC went down by two tries.
The third and final game was against Northern area winners Uckfield who were a bigger and stronger team then us.  ETC were over run and lost by 3 tries.  Joe Marodza, Matt Mulhern and Christos Misirlis all played well.
In summary ETC have great potential next year, and with a full team we could well win this tournament.
My thanks go to the PE staff, Mr Upton and the South Downs sports partnership.
TEAM:  JAKE WALLIS, BILLY ALSOP, SEAN DUNNE (1 match only), KIERAN FARNES, MICHEAL PARSONS, BOB OLUSANYA, JOE MARODZA, ASTON HOLYOAKE, REECE MEWITT, STEVEN MARYAN, LEWIS OLIVER, MATT MULHERN, CHRISTOS MISIRLIS, KIERAN WOOD.
MAN OF THE MATCH:  JAKE WALLIS “Excellent”
INSPIRATIONAL CAPTAIN:  BILLY ALSOP “Never gave up”.

Thursday 1st May 2008:

ETC 2  RATTON 6

After a long wait, ETC took on Ratton in the League Final. The teams had drawn 2-2 in the league, but there had to be a winner on this occasion. ETC were looking to regain the trophy they won last season.

ETC were at full strength, but within 3 minutes found themselves 1-0 down. A cross from the right swirled around in the wind and was not dealt with properly. The ball struck Ryan Mills on the head and rolled into the corner of the net for an own goal. This woke ETC up and the midfield started to get tighter to their players, and this resulted in Will Skilton knocking a great through ball to Harry Nealey. His cross shot was parried by the goalkeeper, but only into the path of Ferhat Ozcan who had the simple task of scoring from six yards, 1-1.

Unfortunately, ETC did not keep up this momentum, and Ratton dominated the game for the majority of the half. Mills and Chris Whiteman left a ball for each other and Ratton regained the lead. A minute before half time it got worse as Ratton took a 3-1 lead when another cross was only half cleared and the ball was drilled into the back of Craig Collins net. ETC kept their heads up though, and a long ball forward was latched onto by Nealey and his cross hit the crossbar. The rebound was punched clear by a defender, therefore giving ETC a great chance to get back into the game from the penalty spot. However, Skilton spurned the opportunity and it remained 3-1 to Ratton at half time.

ETC came out flying in the second half. David Baptista and Seb Dell made some good runs down the right, and put in some good crosses, but there was no finish, with Dell and Nealey going close. Against the run of play, Ratton scored twice in two minutes, putting the game out of the reach of ETC. Ratton’s fourth goal came from the penalty spot when Whiteman brought down the striker, and the fifth was a tame shot which somehow went in.

ETC continued to work hard and were awarded another penalty for handball. This time skipper Ryan Harris took the initiative and he calmly slotted home to pull it back to 5-2.  Yet more poor defending allowed Ratton to hit back immediately to regain a four goal advantage. Despite ETC working hard until the final whistle, there was to be no trophy this season.
Squad: Craig Collins, Owen Francis (Tom Mason), Ryan Harris, Chris Whiteman, Ryan Mills, David Baptista, Seb Dell (Cameron Stevens-Grant), Will Skilton, Aaron Norwood, Harry Nealey, Ferhat Ozcan (Kyle Norman).
Mr. Moore.
